The allure of a tablet is that we can write directly on the screen using a pen stylus.  Tablets come in slate and convertible varieties.  The slate is only a screen, the convertible looks like a notebook but the screen can be rotated and folded down over the keyboard.  I used a Gateway convertible for a time and Vista includes what was XP tablet edition as a part of Vista, so all versions of Vista support a pen stylus.

In my view, tablet functionality while convenient, is not enough to compensate for the shortcomings of Windows.  At this time Apple does not make a tablet notebook, however, Axiotron, modifies the Apple Macbook, into a tablet called a Modbook.  I have no direct experience with the Modbook and am unable to offer your direct guidance on the subject, although I would not refuse an offer from Axiotron to try one out.  However, for Mac lawyers who would like to “write” on and control their Macs with a pen, I have used the Wacom Bamboo and Bamboo Fun pen tablets.  I have give them as much appreciated gifts.

The Wacom tablets cast about $80 and plug into the computer via the USB port and they give you much of the functionality of the tablet on the Mac. I particularity like how easy it is to scroll using the pen.

For the Paperless Law Office using Acrobat the pen allows us to use the pencil commenting tool much easier.  For the artist, when I bought the Wacom Bamboo Fun, I also got Corel Painting Essentials and Abode Photoshop Elements.

If you like the feel of a pen in your hand then I recommend the Bamboo to make your work feel more natural.
